Why Revenge Cheating and Retaliatory Affairs Don’t Work When Trying to Get Even with a Cheating Spouse

It’s natural to want to get back at your cheating spouse when you find out he or she has been cheating on you or having an extramarital affair.

Revenge cheating and retaliatory affairs are two ways infidelity victims commonly try to even the score, or strike back at a cheating mate.

Bertinelli’s Revenge Cheating

Earlier this week, on the Oprah Winfrey Show, Valerie Bertinelli said she and ex-husband Eddie Van Halen cheated on each other during their marriage. (They divorced last year.) Valerie Bertinelli told Oprah she began cheating five years into her marriage to Van Halen. From Valerie Bertinelli’s comments, it sounds like this mutual cheating went on for so long that now they can’t even agree on which one of them cheated first.

That’s one thing infidelity victims fail to realize -- revenge cheating and retaliatory affairs rarely have the desired effect.

How Infidelity Victims Set Up Retaliatory Affairs

Sometimes a one-night stand with a total stranger is enough to make an infidelity victim feel vindicated -- even if their cheating spouse or significant other never finds out about the affair.

Other infidelity victims are more calculating about setting up a retaliatory affair. They will go out of their way to cheat with someone who cause major embarrassment or extreme emotional distress to their partner -- a best friend, family member, or business rival of their cheating spouse or significant other.

Then they carefully set things up to make sure their partner finds out about the retaliatory affair.

How Revenge Cheating Can Backfire in Unexpected Ways

Not only does revenge cheating rarely have the desired result, it can backfire in several ways.

Instead of teaching the cheating spouse or significant other a lesson, or showing the cheater how it feels to be cheated on, a revenge affair can actually have the opposite effect.

Your cheating spouse or significant other may use your revenge affair as an excuse to continue cheating on you, or as justification for having other affairs.

Revenge cheating can also lead to domestic violence or worse. No matter how justified you may feel, your partner may strike back at you physically for what you’ve done.

A Revenge Affairs Won’t Solve the Problem

That’s why, when I consult with infidelity victims, I strongly discourage revenge cheating and retaliatory affairs. Instead of solving the problem of a cheating mate, they can eventually destroy what’s left of the marriage or relationship. And there are always repercussions of some kind. Despite all their cheating back and forth – or maybe because of it -- Valerie Bertinelli and Eddie Van Halen are now divorced.

Wanting to get even or strike back at a cheating spouse is a natural desire. But if you experience an overwhelming desire to engage in a retaliatory affair, DO NOT give in to this urge. Regardless of whether you plan to stay with the cheater or leave, rethink the matter of revenge cheating, and seek professional help. A revenge affair is something you should avoid at all costs.

Signs of Infidelity that Typically Appear AFTER Valentine’s Day

If you think your spouse or significant other is cheating, keep your eyes open for the following signs of infidelity which typically show up AFTER Valentine’s Day.

A hidden gift discovered before Valentine’s Day that has disappeared but wasn’t given to you.

• Receipts for the purchase of 2 identical gifts.

Receipts or credit card statements for candy, flowers, jewelry, lingerie you didn’t personally receive.

• Receipts or charge slips for gifts that don’t correspond with the gift he gave you.

A thank you note or e-mail to or from your spouse for a Valentine’s Day gift you know nothing about.

Gifts of a personal nature, like jewelry or lingerie, that suddenly appear after Valentine’s Day, which she attempts to pass off as items she purchased for herself. ( Ask to see the sales receipt.)

Restaurant receipts or charge slips dated February 13,14,15 for meals that didn’t include you.

Credit card receipts for a hotel stay dated the day before, the day after, or on Valentine’s Day.

Telephone or cell phone bills showing suspicious calls made early morning or late evening or at lunchtime on Valentine’s Day.

Gina’s Cheating Valentine Story

Sometimes incriminating receipts show up after Valentine’s Day. While emptying the bedroom wastepaper basket, Gina found an ATM slip from her husband Carlos’ bank account dated February 10, indicating a $450 cash withdrawal. She immediately became suspicious because the card, roses and box of chocolates Carlos gave her for Valentine’s Day couldn’t have cost anywhere near that amount. She was convinced Carlos spent the money on a Valentine’s Day gift for another woman, and began looking for other signs of infidelity to confirm that Carlos was having an affair.

Julie’s Cheating Valentine Story

Dave told Julie he had to go into work a couple of hours early on Valentine’s Day to finish up some important paperwork for a meeting with his boss later that day. Two weeks later, while out running errands, Julie opened the glove compartment to get some tissues and found a parking ticket dated February 14, which indicated that on Valentine’s morning Dave was illegally parked at a location that was nowhere near his job.

Rodney’s Cheating Valentine Story

Pay attention to any new jewelry that your wife or girlfriend starts wearing after Valentine’s Day – especially if it’s in the shape of a heart. Shortly after Valentine’s Day Rodney noticed that Pat was wearing a bracelet with several small gold heart-shaped charms hanging from it. He commented, “That’s a nice bracelet. Where’d you get it from?” Pat told Rodney she bought it for herself at a jewelry sale after Valentine’s Day. When he questioned her further she was vague about which jewelry store it came from and how much the bracelet cost, and told him she’d misplaced the receipt.

Rodney became suspicious because Pat was very organized person who always saved receipts long after they were needed, and always knew exactly how much everything cost. It was several days before Rodney was able to get a closer look at the bracelet, which Pat left in her jewelry box when she went to the gym. Upon closer examination Rodney saw that each of the first 7 hearts had a single letter engraved on the back, which together spelled “I love you.” The 8th heart, slightly larger, was engraved with Love,Ted 2008.

Knowing What to Look for Is the Key

As I’ve said in previous posts, signs of infidelity seldom appear in isolation. If your spouse or significant other is cheating, there will be scores of corroborating signs. Where there’s one sign, there are plenty of others just waiting to be found. Since many of the signs are subtle and easy to overlook, knowing what to look for is the key. If you haven’t already done so, make sure you request a free copy of the special report entitled 21 Ways to Tell if You Have a Cheating Mate. E-mail InfidelityInfo@gmail.com with “21 Ways - bv” in the subject line.

• If you think you have a cheating mate . . .

• If you know you have a cheating mate and want more proof . . .

• If you’ve been cheated on before and want to make sure it doesn’t happen again . . .

• If you took a cheater back, and gave them a second chance and want to be sure they’re not still seeing their lover behind your back . . .

then you need to have a copy of Is He Cheating on You?” – 829 Telltale Signs. It covers practically every known sign of infidelity, including the subtle signs people usually overlook. Most of the signs in the book apply to both cheating women and cheating men. Missing in Action on Valentine’s Day

On around Valentine’s Day, a cheating woman or cheating man will go out of his or her way to see the person with whom they’re having an affair.

When a Valentine’s gift has been bought, it must be personally given or received.

Be very suspicious of any unexplained absences that occur on Valentine’s Day. If your spouse or significant other disappears without an explanation, or uses a flimsy or trumped up excuse to do something that doesn’t involve you, the “Great Valentine’s Day Gift Exchange is probably taking place.

Gender Specific Excuses to Disappear on Valentine’s Day

Cheaters will come up with all kinds of plausible-sounding excuses to get away to spend time with the Other Woman or the Other Man on Valentine’s Day. The excuse a cheating Valentine uses will depend on whether the cheater is a woman or a man.

The #1 Excuse Men Use

The #1 excuse used by men is some type of work-related excuse.

Be very suspicious if your mate has to go to work early, stay late, or work through his or her lunch hour on Valentine’s Day.

  • Sherry’s husband said he had to drop off some important papers later that night to a colleague who lived across town.
  • Brandi’s boyfriend said he had to go back to his job because he was the last one to leave and he didn’t remember setting the alarm.
  • Yvette’s fiancĂ©, a corrections officer, called to say his relief didn’t show up yet and it looked like he might have to work a double shift.

Make sure you check the previous post entitled Valentine’s Day Signs of Infidelity that Tip You Off to a Workplace Affair.

The #1 Excuse Women Use

A cheating woman will generally use the excuse of a sick relative or friend.

Garrett’s Cheating Valentine Story

Denise told Garret her girlfriend Leeann was depressed because she wasn’t seeing anyone and was spending Valentine’s Day alone. She told Garrett she wanted to go by Leeann’s for a couple of hours to cheer her up and asked if he would mind if they had their Valentine’s dinner later that night. Garrett, being an understanding husband, told Denise he didn’t mind.

About two hours after Denise left, Garrett got a phone call from his brother saying that he and his wife went to a restaurant in the next town for a Valentine’s dinner, and saw Denise at a table in the corner with another man.

Garrett told his brother he was mistaken, because Denise was at Leeann’s house, but his brother insisted that Denise was there.

He was so insistent that Garrett got in his car and drove to Leeann’s house to prove to himself that Denise was there. Sure enough Denise’s car was parked in Leeann’s driveway, but there was no sign of Denise or Leeann.

Garrett parked across the street, a few doors down and waited. Eventually a car pulled into the driveway behind Denise’s car, and Denise got out. Garrett made a U-turn, blocked both cars in the driveway, and made such a scene that the neighbors called the police.

Valentine’s Day Signs of Infidelity that Tip You Off to a Workplace Affair

Workplace affairs are very common today. In fact, work is the #1 place for cheating spouses and significant others to find partners with whom to have an affair.

Cheating Valentines involved in workplace affairs usually plan things that can be done during working hours on Valentine’s Day. That way they avoid arousing suspicion by coming home late.

It could be anything from a long, leisurely lunch at a special restaurant, to a noontime tryst at a nearby hotel, or an afternoon lovers rendezvous.

Danielle’s Cheating Valentine Story

Danielle showed up at Grant’s job around lunchtime even though he’d already told her he had to work through his lunch hour and couldn’t get away. Danielle observed Grant and a female co-worker as they left the building with their arms around each other, and followed them on foot for 3 blocks. They were so engrossed in each other that Grant never even noticed Danielle until she approached them as they were about to enter a restaurant.

Telephone Tactics to Confirm a Workplace Affair

You don’t have to be as brazen as Danielle if you suspect a workplace affair. Try to confirm your suspicions by using one of the telephone tactics below on Valentine’s Day:

  • Call around mid-morning on Valentine’s Day and offer to meet him/her for lunch. Does he /she discourage you from coming or make an excuse for why he/she can’t get away?
  • Call just before lunchtime. Does he/she cut the conversation short, rush you off the phone, or seem a little to eager to get away?
  • Call after lunch. Did he/she return at the usual time? Or did he/she take an extended lunch, or take the whole afternoon off?
  • Call an hour or two before quitting time. Did he/she leave work early to spend an hour or two with his/her lover before coming home?

Fran’s Cheating Valentine Story

Fran called George’s job to have him pick up a bottle of wine on his way home for their Valentine’s dinner that night. George’s secretary told Fran George had just left and was on his way home for the romantic afternoon he’d planned for Valentine’s Day. She told Fran she was lucky to have such a romantic husband. George’s cover was blown when he failed to show up, and arrived home at his usual time from work.

Valentine's Week Business Trips

Be wary if your spouse or significant other has to take a business trip during Valentine’s Week. It could be legitimate. But it could also be an excuse to have an uninterrupted Valentine’s celebration with the Other Woman or the Other Man.

Aletha’s Cheating Valentine Story

Leon told his wife he had to go out of town on business in February. His business trip coincided with Valentine’s week. So Aletha persuaded her mother-in-law to keep the children so she could surprise Leon by showing up at his hotel so they could celebrate Valentine’s Day together . When Aletha knocked on the door of Leon’s hotel room, he opened the door expectantly, thinking it was the champagne he ordered from room service. Aletha could see past him into the room where a scantily-clad female workmate was lounging across the bed.

Valentine’s Day Flowers Can Expose a Cheating Mate

Flowers sent or received on Valentine’s Day can give cheating Valentines of both sexes away.

A Tip for Men with Cheating Valentines

Flowers Sent to Her Job

Men, if your wife or girlfriend receives Valentine’s Day flowers from someone other than you, it’s pretty much a foregone conclusion that you’re not her only Valentine -- especially if the flowers are sent to her workplace instead of her home.

Cliff’s Cheating Valentine Story

Cliff stopped by his wife Kate’s job to take her out for a romantic Valentine’s Day dinner after work. While Cliff was waiting downstairs in the lobby for Kate to come down, two of Kate’s co-workers who knew him stopped to compliment him on the beautiful flowers he sent Kate for Valentine’s Day. One woman raved on and on about how she’d never seen such an unusual bouquet and asked Cliff which florist he used. When she saw the expression on Cliff’s face, she realized too late that she and her co-worker had made a terrible mistake. Cliff hadn’t sent Kate any flowers for Valentine’s Day. The flowers were from someone else.

Guys - if you suspect her of cheating (or even if you don’t), stop by your wife’s or girlfriend’s job the day after Valentine’s Day. Try to check out her desk or work station, if you can. If she received flowers from a secret lover, she can’t bring them home. So they’ll still be there the day after Valentine’s Day.

A Tip for Women with Cheating Valentines

The Love Note Attached to Your Flowers

Countless cheating husbands and cheating boyfriends have been exposed by the notes on the Valentine’s Day flowers they send.

Mix-ups with the love notes that accompany these flowers are one of the most common ways these Valentine’s Day cheaters get exposed.

If your name is Carla, and the note with your Valentine’s Day flowers says “ To Claire, with love” – if that’s not the name of one of his female relatives, he’s got some explaining to do.

Brianna’s Cheating Valentine Story

Brianna received a dozen long stemmed roses from her boyfriend on Valentine’s Day. But the note that accompanied the flowers read:

To my darling wife on Valentine’s Day,

You mean the world to me.

Words could never express the depth of my love for you.

Your loving and devoted husband,

Charles

Up to that point, Brianna had no idea that she’d been dating a married man.

Don’t Confront the Cheater Without Additional Proof

Don’t confront your cheating spouse or significant other solely on the basis of the “cheating Valentine signs” in the posts on this blog or the signs of infidelity in the article on my website entitled How to Catch a Cheater on Valentine’s Day.

To build an airtight case against the cheater, you need to have additional proof. Where there’s one sign of infidelity, there are always dozens of other corroborating signs just waiting to be found. Cheaters ALWAYS display multiple telltale signs. Knowing what to look for is the key. For starters, request the FREE infidelity tip sheet and the FREE infidelity report listed below.

Look for Incriminating Valentine Gift Receipts

If you’ve got a cheating husband or boyfriend on your hands, more than likely he’ll be buying the Other Woman a Valentine’s Day gift. Now is the time to look around for an incriminating store receipt.

Men are Careless with Receipts

You probably won’t have to look very hard to find the gift receipt because men tend to be careless about things like this. They’ll casually stuff things in their coat or jacket pockets and forget to take them out. Or they’ll empty their pockets and absently-mindedly toss everything on top of the dresser or the night stand or in the garbage.

What you’re looking for is a store receipt or a credit card charge slip from a jewelry store, women’s boutique or specialty shop, a lingerie store or catalog (like Victoria’s Secret), a florist, or something along those lines.

Don’t Jump to Conclusions

If you find a suspicious receipt, don’t jump to conclusions, because it could be a receipt for the gift he intends to give you. Hang on to it until after Valentine’s Day. If the gift he gives you on Valentine’s Day doesn’t correspond with the receipt you found, then he has some explaining to do.

Celine’s Cheating Valentine Story

While dropping off her husband’s suit at the dry cleaners, Celine found a jewelry store receipt in his jacket pocket for a 14K gold and diamond heart-shaped pendant that cost $446. Thinking it was the receipt for her Valentine’s gift, she said nothing so as not to spoil the surprise. But on Valentine’s Day Kevin gave her a ring. Although Celine couldn’t find out who Kevin gave the pendant to, the fact that he bought a $400 gift for another woman told her all she needed to know.

Valentine’s Day is the Best Time to Catch Your Cheating Mate

Most people don’t associate infidelity with Valentine’s Day. In addition to being the most romantic time of the year, Valentine Season (February 13, 14, and 15) is the time period when infidelity and extramarital affairs reach a peak.

That’s one of the reasons why I conduct a Valentine’s Day Infidelity Awareness Campaign each year – to let people know that Valentine’s Day is the best time to catch a cheating mate.
( Click here for more information about the annual Valentine’s Day Infidelity Awareness Campaign)

Capitalize on the Great Valentine’s Gift Exchange

The National Retail Federation predicts that over $17 billion will be spent on Valentine's gifts this year. We all know that a sizeable chunk of that money will be spent by cheaters buying cards, flowers, candy, jewelry, lingerie and other Valentine’s Day gifts for the people they’re cheating with.

On or around Valentine’s Day, cheaters everywhere will either be giving gifts to, or receiving gifts from their secret lovers. You can use this fact to your advantage if you suspect infidelity, or if you already know you have a cheating mate. This is the ideal time to catch the cheater with the Other Woman / Other Man, or to get tangible proof of the affair.

A cheating husband or boyfriend HAS to buy the “Other Woman” a Valentine’s Day gift. There’s no way around it, if he wants to stay in her good graces -- and in her bed. More than likely, if they live or work in close proximity to each other, he will personally give her this gift.

A cheating wife or girlfriend HAS to make herself available to receive the obligatory Valentine’s Day gift from her secret lover.

If your spouse or significant other is missing for several hours on Valentine’s Day, the day before, or the day after, the “Great Gift Exchange” is probably taking place.

His Paper Trail

Regardless of how a cheating husband or boyfriend pays for the Other Woman’s Valentine’s Day gift, his purchase will leave a paper trail. ATM slips, bank statements, credit card bills and store receipts all contain valuable clues – where or when the transaction took place, and what was bought, or how much money was withdrawn or spent.

Suspicious Gifts to Her

Men with cheating wives or girlfriends should be on the lookout for suspicious Valentine’s gifts. Take note of any new jewelry or sexy lingerie she receives, or that you see her wearing on or around Valentine’s Day. Any jewelry that’s heart-shaped, is a dead give-away. Likewise, red lace, silk or satin lingerie.

More Valentine’s Day Signs of Infidelity

Throughout the month of February, I’ll be giving you detailed information about these and other signs of infidelity that you can find around Valentine’s Day. I’ll also share some strategies you can use to catch your “Cheating Valentine,” and share some interesting stories from my files on how several Valentine’s Day cheaters got caught.

Tell Us How You Caught a Cheating Valentine

If you have a personal story you’d like to share about how you, or someone you know caught a cheater on or around Valentine’s Day, e-mail it to me at CheatingValentine@gmail.com with “Valentine’s Day Story” in the subject line. Real names will NOT be used in the stories selected to post.
