How to Catch a Cheating Spouse or Lover on New Year’s Eve

The key to catching a cheating spouse or lover on New Year’s Eve is to observe his or her behavior close to midnight on New Year’s Eve, or first thing on New Year’s Day.

Making Contact with the Other Woman or Other Man

Regardless of whether you and the cheater are out partying, or quietly bringing in the New Year together at home, he or she will usually attempt to contact the person they’re cheating with to wish them a Happy New Year. Cheating spouses and lovers can be amazingly resourceful in coming up with excuses to get away from you long enough to make a phone call, send an e-mail or text message, or even make a quick visit if the Other Woman or Other Man lives nearby. Stay alert and you may even catch the cheater in the act.

Unusual or Suspicious Behavior

Be suspicious of any unexplained absences, whispered conversations, or sudden errands that your spouse or lover has to run shortly before or after midnight on New Year’s Eve.

If for some reason the cheater is unable to contact his or her lover on New Year’s Eve, they’ll do so at the first opportunity on New Year’s Day.

Cell Phone Clues

If you can get access to the cheater’s cell phone (or the cell phone bills with their December and January calls) you may be able to find some valuable telltale signs. Look at the last calls made on December 31st (New Year’s Eve) or the first calls made on January 1st (New Year’s Day.) If you find any suspicious or unfamiliar numbers, use a reverse phone search service to find out whose numbers they are. (For an affordable reverse phone search service, click here.)

You Still Need More Proof

Keep in mind that even if you find evidence of infidelity on New Year’s Eve, you may still need to get additional proof. If you don’t have enough proof to build a solid case, the cheater will lie, deny, and attempt to explain away the evidence you’ve found.

8 Gift-related Signs of Cheating that Show Up at Christmastime

If you suspect your spouse or significant other of cheating on you, Christmas is a good time to confirm what you suspect. A cheater can be exposed by the Christmas gift he or she gives, or by the gift he or she receives. If you know what to look for before or shortly after Christmas, you can find tangible evidence of an affair. Be alert for the following gift-related telltale signs:

1. A suspicious amount of money withdrawn from a bank account.
If a substantial sum of money is withdrawn from one of your joint bank accounts without your knowledge or consent, an alarm should go off in your head. Especially if the missing funds exceed the amount of money your spouse or significant other usually spends at Christmas time.

2. Unusual or unexplained ATM withdrawals.
Many cheating men or women husbands think they can escape detection if they pay for their lover’s gift with cash instead of a credit or debit card. But even cash has to come from somewhere. People tend to forget that ATM transactions also leave a paper trail. The information on those ATM withdrawal slips may hold important clues. Look closely at the date, time, and amount of money indicated on the slip. Also take note of the location of the ATM machine from which the money was withdrawn.

3. Credit card statements that show unusual charges made at jewelry stores, boutiques, or at men’s or women’s specialty stores.
Are there charges on your credit card statement for gift items like lingerie from Victoria's Secret, or jewelry from Tiffany's? If you, or another female in the family didn’t receive these gifts for Christmas, who did he give them to? Does her credit card statement show purchases from expensive men’s clothing stores? Who did she buy these items for, if she didn’t give them to you?

4. Receipts for gift items that you didn't personally receive.
The same thing applies to actual store receipts. If you didn't get the items in question, who were they given to? If you’ve ruled out other members of the family, someone has some explaining to do?

5. Duplicate gifts.
A receipt for the purchase of two identical gifts is a dead giveaway, as are actual duplicate gifts themselves. But many cheaters try to simplify their Christmas shopping by purchasing identical gifts for their lover and their spouse. Find out who the other gift is for.

6. Giving or receiving Christmas gifts of a personal nature to or from a member of the opposite sex.
Certain gifts go far beyond what someone would normally give a person who's merely a casual friend. Intimate apparel, or items of clothing that require intimate knowledge of a person's measurements or size. For example – someone other than a family member gives your husband or boyfriend silk boxer shorts, or a dress shirt that requires knowledge of his neck and sleeve size. Or your wife receives lingerie, undergarments or sleepwear, from a male friend.

7. Giving or receiving a disproportionately expensive Christmas gift from someone of the opposite sex.
There are limits to the amount of money a person would normally spend on a gift for a business acquaintance or a casual friend. If someone other than you gives your wife a fur coat, or diamond earrings, or your husband receives golf clubs or a laptop computer -- there's more to that relationship than meets the eye. If they try to pass off this gift as an item they purchased for themselves, ask to see the credit card statement or sales receipt.

8. The Case of the Disappearing Gift.
This is one of the most common scenarios I hear about at Christmastime. A hidden gift is discovered and the person who found it assumes it’s for him or her. They say nothing about their discovery, so as not to spoil the surprise. But Christmas comes and goes, the gift disappears, and it isn’t given to them. Now they’re left wondering who the mystery gift was given to.

Your Marriage or Relationship May Be at Stake

These gift-related telltale signs are not ironclad indications of infidelity. But if your spouse or significant other has given you reason to suspect they’re having an affair, the gift-related signs you find at Christmastime can give you valuable clues about what’s going on. Suspicious or unusual behavior involving the giving or receiving of Christmas gifts may help you fill in the blanks. So don’t be so quick to dismiss these things as being insignificant. At the very least, these telltale signs will alert you to the possibility that your marriage or relationship may be at stake.

There Will Also Be Other Signs

Realize that any gift-related signs you find during the Christmas season are merely the tip of the infidelity iceberg. Signs of infidelity never appear in isolation. Where there’s one sign, there are usually dozens of collaborating signs just waiting to be found. Since most of them will be subtle, knowing what to look for is the key.

Educate Yourself about Infidelity

That’s why your personal library should contain a good infidelity reference book. You can benefit just as much from a good infidelity reference book, as you can from a good medical reference book. Knowing how to spot signs or symptoms that could be fatal to your marriage relationship, is as important as knowing how to spot symptoms that could be fatal to your health. In both cases, survival depends on early detection. Top Infidelity News Stories for 2008

Every December I pick the top 10 infidelity news stories of the year.

Since I’m frequently called on by the media to comment on infidelity issues in the news, I make it a point to stay abreast of any news related to infidelity, cheating spouses and extramarital affairs.

I also keep up with the latest infidelity studies, polls, surveys, research and other developments in this field. It “goes with the territory” since I’ve been researching infidelity for the past 15 years.

A Record Year for Infidelity News

2008 was a record year for infidelity news.

Less than halfway through the year, there were already so many infidelity stories in the news, that the list was almost complete. And the infidelity news kept on coming. It was hard to narrow the list down to 10.

It seems that everybody was getting in on the infidelity act – politicians, celebrities, sports figures, and the rich and famous were cheating on their mates.

New infidelity statistics and studies were published or written about almost monthly, by authors, reporters, and researchers in the field.

This year’s top 10 infidelity news list is an interesting mix of high profile cheaters, and new infidelity research and statistics.

Below are my final picks for the top 10 infidelity news stories of 2008.

The Top 10 Infidelity News Stories for 2008

The Eliot Spitzer Sex Scandal
New York Governor Eliot Spitzer, (Client 9) was forced to resign when it came out that he regularly patronized high-class call girls from the Emperors Club in Washington, DC, paying one young prostitute over $4000 for the night. Spitzer’s resignation was followed by incoming New York Governor David Paterson’s public confession that he and his wife both had extramarital affairs.

John Edwards Cheats on His Cancer-Stricken Wife
In an ABC News' "Nightline interview, former presidential candidate John Edwards admitted lying about his extramarital affair when the National Enquirer first reported he was cheating with his campaign videographer Rielle Hunter. His wife, Elizabeth Edwards has terminal cancer.

A-Rod’s and Madonna’s Affair of the Heart
Alex Rodriguez’s emotional affair with Madonna was the final indignity for Cynthia Rodriguez, who had long tolerated her husband’s cheating ways. C-Rod said A-Rod left her no choice but to divorce the philandering baseball star.

New York Times Article on the Changing Landscape of Infidelity
Tara Parker-Pope’s article, Love, Sex and the Changing Landscape of Infidelity sparked widespread media coverage of the latest research on infidelity among different age groups, and the difficulty in obtaining accurate infidelity statistics.

Wildly Exaggerated Reports of a Cheating Gene
Hasse Walum, a behavioral geneticist at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm led a study of a genetic variant in men that was immediately (and erroneously ) dubbed by the media as “the cheating gene,” despite Walum’s protests that the study had nothing to do with infidelity.

The Truth About Cheating
The hot new infidelity book by Gary Neuman in which he claims that most men cheat because of emotional dissatisfaction. Neuman’s Oprah interviews caused a nationwide uproar because, he implied that wives are to blame when their husbands cheat.

3 Infidelity Studies Reveal That Happy Husbands Cheat Too
Infidelity studies published by 3 different researchers in 3 separate medical journals confirm that good marriages are not immune to extramarital affairs, and that even happy husbands cheat on their wives.

Christie Brinkley and Peter Cook Divorce Trial
The supermodel’s highly publicized divorce trial and custody battle revealed details about Cook’s affair with his teenage mistress, and exposed his $3000 a month internet porn habit.

Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick Lies Under Oath
Kilpatrick, now in jail, was repeatedly hauled into court, and continued to lie about his affair with his former Chief of Staff until dozens of their X-rated text messages, leaked to the Detroit Free Press, finally revealed the truth.

USA Today Reports Almost Everybody Knows a Cheat
USA Today unveiled the results of a Gallup Poll which underscored the pervasiveness of infidelity. 54% know a married person who’s cheating on his or her mate.

Proof that Office Christmas Parties Breed Workplace Affairs

Office Christmas parties lead to workplace affairs.

That’s why every December, as part of my annual Christmas Infidelity Awareness Campaign, I urge men and women to accompany their spouses and significant others to the office Christmas party at their job. Your presence there acts as a deterrent to workplace affairs.

When I talk about how office Christmas parties have become breeding grounds for workplace affairs, some people take me seriously and follow my advice. It usually those who have been victims of workplace infidelity in the past.

But others tend to think I’m either making things up, exaggerating, or blowing things out of proportion.

Statistics on Office Christmas Parties and Workplace Affairs

Let me assure you that there are dozens of infidelity studies, polls and surveys which support that claim.

I’ve listed a few of them below:

● In a survey conducted by Men's Health magazine, 44% of the males said they'd had an affair with a co-worker at a holiday office party at least once in their life.

● In a survey by Trojan Condoms, 49% of office workers said they’d be willing to have sex with a fellow employee at the Christmas party if the opportunity presented itself.

● Almost 33% of those in the Trojan survey said they’d previously had sex with a colleague during or after an office Christmas party.

● A survey conducted by Canon revealed that 1/3 of the workers either kissed a co-worker, or ended-up going home with them after the company Christmas party.

● 64% of the office workers in the OfficeSMART survey said they personally knew of affairs that started at their office Christmas party.

● 1 out of every 4 people in the CareerOne.com.au office romance survey said they hooked up with someone at the office Christmas party.

● 41% of the 18-30 year old office workers in another study admitted getting together with a co-worker at their annual Christmas party. 13% said they’d actually had sex at the event, but only 6% of them got caught.

● 1 out of 5 women in the WorldWIT survey became romantically involved with a colleague at an office party.

● 33% of them admitted to having an affair following their office party fling, and a year or more later, 13% of them were still romantically involved.

● A London survey found that 1 in 10 respondents started a relationship at the company Christmas party. 25% of those questioned said that’s how they met their future spouse.

These are just a few of the many studies and surveys on office Christmas parties, sexual behavior and workplace affairs. Other studies show similar results.

Be There to Safeguard Your Marriage or Relationship

If your spouse or significant other’s company is having an annual Christmas party this year and guests are invited, make sure you attend with your mate. Just being there will act as a deterrent to workplace affairs.

If You Suspect Workplace Infidelity

If you suspect that your spouse or significant other is already involved in a workplace affair, go with them to their office Christmas party and you’ll find out the truth. Office Christmas parties have a way of exposing workplace affairs. If your spouse or significant other is romantically involved with someone they work with, their behavior or body language will give them away. But knowing what to look for is the key.

Attend Your Mate’s Office Christmas Party to Discourage Workplace Affairs

In my previous post I promised to give you 3 more good reasons to attend the office Christmas party at your spouse or significant other’s job, regardless of whether or not you suspect a workplace affair.

Office Christmas Parties are Breeding Grounds for Workplace Affairs

Office parties tend to be breeding grounds for infidelity and extramarital affairs. A number of studies confirm that the workplace is the #1 place where cheating men and women find willing partners with whom to have an affair. One study found that 73 % of the cheating men and 42% of the cheating women met their affair partner at work.

According to one private investigation firm, affairs between co-workers are more likely to be initiated at the annual holiday party, than at any other time of the year. You need to attend this all-important company-sponsored social event with your spouse or significant other if you want to safeguard your relationship, and discourage a possible workplace affair.

Prevent a Work Spouse Relationship from Becoming a Workplace Affair

The annual Christmas party is prime time for a work spouse relationship to make the transition to a workplace affair. Fortified by a few drinks, one work spouse may say or do something to their work husband or work wife that could lay the groundwork for taking their work spouse relationship to the next level. Your presence at your spouse or significant other’s office Christmas party could keep their work spouse relationship from turning into a workplace affair.

Keep Predatory Co-workers at Bay

Make your presence known to your mate’s co-workers and stake your claim. If a co-worker has been secretly admiring your spouse or significant other all year, the office Christmas party is when they’re most likely to make their move. Being there with your mate will put a damper on those plans. Even the most brazen co-worker who has designs on your spouse or significant other, is likely to have second thoughts about making a play for them with you there.

Stop Sexual Escapades at the Office Party

It’s fairly common for employees to sneak away from the office party to engage in sexual shenanigans. In a survey by Trojan Condoms, 49% of office workers said they’d be willing to have sex with a fellow employee at the Christmas party if the opportunity presented itself. Accompany your spouse or significant other to their company Christmas party, and reduce the chance of such an opportunity presenting itself.

If you Suspect a Workplace Affair

What if you suspect your spouse or significant other of already being involved in a workplace affair? Since workplace affairs are usually difficult to detect, the office party is one of the best chances you’ll have to find out if what you suspect is true. By watching your spouse or significant other interact with opposite sex co-workers, you’ll be able to tell if they’re having a workplace affair. Their body language and behavior around each other will give them away.

But knowing what to look for is the key. If you’re not sure what to be alert for, send for the FREE tip sheet entitled “What to Look for at the Office Party if You Suspect a Workplace Affair.” E-mail InfidelityInfo@gmail.com with What to Look For-b2 in the subject line.

The Office Christmas Party Will Expose a Suspected Workplace Affair

Workplace infidelity is usually hard to detect.

Not so at Christmastime.

Best Way to Expose a Workplace Affair

If you suspect your spouse or significant other of being romantically involved with someone at work, make sure you accompany the suspected cheater to the annual Christmas party at his or her job. Since company Christmas parties have a way of exposing workplace affairs, this is the best way to find out if what you suspect is true. Attend the festivities with the suspected cheater and you’re sure to find out.

Watch the Suspected Cheater Interact

Observing the suspected cheater interact with his or her opposite sex co-workers in a social setting like the office Christmas party will either confirm your suspicions, or set your mind at ease. If he or she is romantically involved with someone they work with, their behavior and body language around each other will give them away, even in little ways. But knowing what to look for is the key.”

What to Look For

If you’re not quite sure what to look for when you get there, or how to proceed, follow the guidelines in my free tip sheet, What to Look for at the Office Christmas Party if You Suspect a Workplace Affair. To get your free copy, e-mail InfidelityInfo@gmail.com with What to Look For – b1 in the subject line.

Many of the tips are taken directly from Chapter 26 (His Behavior Around Other Women)-- in my book, Is He Cheating on You? – 829 Telltale Signs, which lists practically every known sign of infidelity, including the subtle signs people usually overlook. Most of the information in the tip sheet (and the book) apply to cheating women, as well as cheating men.
